Teko | Aircon Cleaning Made Easy, So You Can DIY

Learn how to do aircon cleaning at home with these easy-to-remember steps.

Do you feel that your air conditioner at home isn’t working out as it used to be? Before you think of buying a new one, ask yourself if you are taking care of your unit well. Have you cleaned it for the past month or so? Experts recommend that aircon cleaning should be at least once every year.

A well-maintained aircon unit can last long and can keep your family from getting sick.

If not, then it is time for you to do aircon cleaning. It might be overwhelming to do this task, but we will make it easier for you to understand with our simple tips.

Disclaimer: These tips are applicable to window air conditioners. After all, they are the most common type of air conditioners at home. These tips might also work for other types, but it is best to check out their instruction booklet.

Check the manual

The user guide that comes with your unit should give you some basic steps on aircon cleaning. If you have do not have it anymore, search for it online and download it.

Turn off the unit.

Switching off your air conditioner does not only mean turning it off on its control panel. It also means unplugging the cord connected to it. Make sure that the unit will not emit any electrical charge. It might electrocute you.

Clean the outside cover.

Use a wet cloth to wipe it down clean. Make sure to remove all dirt and grime so it does not enter the unit when you open it later.

Remove the front cover.

You can do this with your bare hands. Other units might need a screwdriver. If so, keep the screws or hooks in a safe place where you can see them. You will need them once you return everything to its proper place.

Clean the filter.

Filters keep out dust and bacteria in the air we breathe. If you are a regular air conditioner user, this means cleaning this part should be of the same frequency.

Take extra care in removing the filter and clean it with warm, soapy water. If it is completely filthy, use a soft brush.

Once it is clean, let it dry completely before reinstalling it. Do not waste your effort if you return it wet, as it attracts dirt and mold.

If the filter looks like it is beyond repair, it is better to replace it.

You can stop with these five steps,  but you can do more if you want. For those who want a thorough aircon cleaning, keep reading.

Clean the coils.

Start with the evaporator coils, which you can see underneath the filter. Clean them by using a vacuum with a brush attachment. If you do not have one, use a plastic scrub brush. Spray them with a coil cleaner afterward.

Do the same process for the condenser coils at the back of the unit. Cleaning these parts will help with better airflow.

Comb the cooling fins.

Straighten bent cooling fins with a fine comb. Wear gloves for safety since you can get cuts from this task.

Clean the fan blades.

Wipe this component with a soft and clean cloth. Be gentle in doing so and avoid getting them bent. Your air conditioner might become louder if you bend one of these blades.

Aircon cleaning should not be a complicated process. Anyone can do it if he or she has the time for it. If you are busy, get a professional service technician to do it for you.
