Are you currently in search for an aircon for your home? If you’re unsure about the size or capacity, we’re here to help! We’re Teko.ph, the largest aircon, appliance, and computer services provider in the Philippines, with a guide to knowing the right aircon HP per sqm.
Why You Need to Know the Aircon HP & Your Room Size
While shopping for an aircon, you will see that they’re of different capacities or horsepower (HP.) HP refers to the cooling capacity of an AC, or how much strength it has to cool a specific area.
When you buy a desk fan for your living room, it will struggle to cool the entire space. Same principle goes to air conditioners. An aircon with low HP rating (0.5 or 0.75 HP) might be perfect for a small bedroom. Meanwhile, a 2.5 HP AC can cool a spacious living room.
Remember that an overly powerful aircon for a small room will constantly switch on and of—wasting energy and money. In the same way, a small aircon will also drive up your electricity bills if you use it in a large space.
It’s also important to note that you can’t guess your room size. If you have a measuring tape, grab one and do these:
- Measure the length of one wall straight out to the opposite wall. Note the measurement in meters.
- Measure the width from one wall to the opposite side that’s perpendicular to the wall you measured earlier.
- Multiply the measurements. That’s your room size in square meters.

Aircon HP Per Sqm Guide for Your Room
According to Meralco, it may cost you P965 per month on your electric bill if you choose the wrong aircon size! To guide you, here’s a list of recommended aircon HP per sqm:
Room Size | Aircon Size |
6-11 square meter room | 0.5 HP |
12-17 square meter room | 0.75 HP |

23-27 square meter room | 1.5 HP |
28-40 square meter room | 2 HP |

While the aircon HP is important, it’s not the only factor to consider. Take note of the number of people who will use the room, the insulation, and even sunlight exposure. Don’t forget to consider your budget since there are lots of good brands of aircons in the Philippines.
