3 Easy Fixes for Washing Machine Not Draining
Before trying the tips below, be sure to know your washing machine type and its parts. Washing machines such as top-load automatic and front-load automatic have a pump filter and drain hose. Twin tub semi-automatics usually have a lint filter and drain hose but no pump filter. On the other hand, manual washing machines are simpler and have just a drain hose.
- Check & clean the drain hose
Applicable to: All types (Top Load, Front Load, Twin Tub, Automatic, Manual)
All washing machine types have drain hoses, which are the main exit point for water. Look for the hose, which is usually at the back or side of the machine. Make sure it is not bent or has clogs inside. Sometimes, small creatures like lizards or spiders find their way into these hoses, so always check thoroughly!
- Clean the pump filter
Applicable to: Most top-load automatic and front-load automatic washing machines
Many automatic washing machines have a pump filter that can get clogged with small items. It can restrict water flow and prevent the machine from draining.
To fix this, look for the pump filter (check your user manual if you can’t find it), which is usually at the front bottom of front loaders or under the top panel of top loaders. It may still have water, so be sure to place a shallow pan underneath to catch it. Open the cover and remove any debris.
Some models also have a coin trap near the pump filter. Remember to clean it and remove coins from the tray.
If you own a twin tub or manual washing machine, look for the lint filter in the wash tub and clean it regularly.
- Use a drain-cleaning solution
Applicable to: All types (Top Load, Front Load, Twin Tub, Automatic, Manual)
Have you ever cleaned your washing machine since the day you bought it? If not, then there might be mineral deposits and soap scum that cause clogs. To help clear these, you may use equal parts white vinegar and hot water.
You may pour this solution into the empty washing machine drum and run a hot water cycle for automatic machines. For twin tubs and manual machines, pour the solution into the wash tub, let it sit for 15 minutes, then drain.
Regular Washing Machine Cleaning & Maintenance
Remember, regular maintenance can prevent many common washing machine problems—like any other appliance. Keep your machine clean, use the right amount of detergent, and address issues promptly to ensure it serves you well for years.
While these tips can resolve issues like a washing machine not draining, some problems require expert attention. If you’ve tried these steps and your washing machine still isn’t draining properly, it’s time to call the professionals from Teko PH.
