Your aircon works overtime to keep your space cool and comfortable. But you might not think about it much, that little mesh screen inside your unit plays a big role in keeping the air you breathe clean. The good news? Cleaning it is a breeze! We’re Teko.ph, the largest aircon, appliance, and computer services provider in the Philippines, with a quick guide to cleaning your aircon filter in just 10 minutes.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Clean Aircon Filter

Cleaning your aircon filter is easy. To start, prepare a clean cloth or soft brush, warm water, mild soap or detergent, a small basin, and a dry towel.

1, Turn off your aircon. Unplug it and switch the breaker off before starting any cleaning or maintenance work.

2. Remove the filter. Its location may depend on your aircon type. For window type aircon, just open the front panel by lifting it upward. For split type aircon, lift the front cover until you hear a click. The filter is usually behind the front or side panel for tower/floor mounted type. For other aircon types that are complex like cassette, concealed, and suspended, you can check the user manual for instructions.

Most filters slide out easily once the panel is open. Be careful to avoid damaging the plastic frames.

3. Vacuum or brush the aircon filter. If it has loose dust or clumpy debris, gently remove them to make the washing step easier.

4. Wash the air conditioner filter. First, rinse it with warm water. Then, soak the filter in warm water with mild soap for 10-15 minutes. Gently remove any surface debris.

5. Rinse thoroughly. Make sure to remove all traces of soap.

6. Dry completely. Place the filter in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and allow it to dry completely. You can also gently pat it dry with a clean cloth or towel.

7. Reinstall. Once the aircon filter is completely dry,  slide the filter back into its original position and close the panel securely. Now you can turn your aircon back on and enjoy cleaner, cooler air!

Why Clean Your Aircon Filter?

It’s a no-brainer. As you use your aircon, it accumulates dust and dirt. When it’s dirty, these pollutants can circulate back into your room, which isn’t great for your health, especially if you have allergies or respiratory issues.  A dirty filter also makes your aircon work harder and consumes more energy. Thankfully, cleaning your aircon filter is quick, easy, and doesn’t require special skills.

How Often Should You Clean Your Aircon Filter?

For optimal performance and air quality, aim to clean your aircon filter at least once a month, especially during the peak dry months (March-May) when you’re using your aircon frequently.

While you’re at it, clear any debris or leaves around your outdoor compressor unit. Also, every 3-4 months, you should hire a professional technician to do full aircon cleaning to keep your entire unit clean. Teko’s trained technicians can clean hard-to-reach components, check refrigerant levels, and even identify potential issues before they become expensive problems.

Remember, set a reminder on your phone to clean your aircon filter every month during heavy-use periods. This simple 10-minute task can save you thousands of pesos in electricity bills and repair costs over time.
