Most top lood washers may just look the same, but did you know that there are traditional agitator washers and then there are the newer impeller washing machine that could be better? We’re Teko.ph, the largest aircon, appliance, and computer services provider in the Philippines, with important details on why this might be perfect for your home and how to use it properly.

What’s An Impeller Washing Machine?

Do you remember seeing or having a top load washing machine with the plastic pole (called an agitator) sticking up in the middle? Newer models now have a flat, low-profile disc at the bottom or the “impeller.” This part rotates and moves the water, creating a current that helps move your clothes, rubbing them against each other to clean them. In some impeller washers, the spin basket and impeller rotate in opposite directions to create turbulence inside the tub to tumble clothes.

Benefits of Impeller Washing Machine

Impeller technology changes the way we do laundry. Here is why it’s often the better choice:

  • Gentler on Clothes: Without the agitator and its aggressive twisting, your clothes now have a gentler way of cleaning. The fabrics rub against each other with the help of the impeller. You can now say goodbye to stretched collars and faded colors!
  • Wash More at Once: Without that big pole in the middle, you have way more space, even for bulky items like your heavy blankets, curtains, or towels.
  • Lower Electricity Bills: Impeller machines are a “High Efficiency” (HE) appliance. They use less energy than traditional washers as it does not have the heavy agitator to power.
  • Less Water Usage: An impeller washing machine can consume less water as it does not need a full tub.

How to Load & Use An Impeller Washing Machine Correctly

Even though the impeller is “smarter” tech, it won’t work as efficiently if you load it like a traditional machine. If you just dump a mountain of laundry in the center, the machine will struggle to move the load.

First, try the donut method. Just keep the center clear as you drop your clothes loosely around the edges of the impeller disc, forming a “donut” shape. This helps create a vortex that pulls the clothes from the outside to the center and back again.

And even if there’s extra space compared to a traditional agitator washing machine with the pole, avoid putting too many clothing items. You’ll need that space to help tumble them in the water and let dirt wash away.

After every use, remember to leave the lid open (or leave a tiny space so it doesn’t close completely.) This is so you can prevent the musty smell from developing inside the tub.

Impeller washing machines are reliable, but they once they start showing weird error codes (like “UE” for unbalanced load,) does not drain, or starts making strange sounds from the inside, don’t try to force it! Go ahead and check if you can solve it by checking the user manual.
