An aircon dripping water is quite common, especially during the hot and humid days when your AC works overtime. The good news is, there are easy ways you can solve it, and we’re here to help! We’re Teko.ph, the largest aircon, appliance, and computer services provider in the Philippines, with a quick guide on why this happens and what you can do about it now.

Why Is Your Aircon Dripping Water?

First off, a little bit of water from your aircon is normal. It’s just condensation or the moisture in the air turning into water as it cools down. This water should drip outside through a drain. But if you’re seeing a steady stream or a puddle inside your home, that’s a sign something isn’t quite right with the drainage system.

The most common culprits of water leaking from aircon include clogged drain lines, dirty air filters, low refrigerant levels, or improper installation. Sometimes it’s as simple as a blocked drain pan, while other times the issue might be more complex.

Solutions for Window Type Aircon Dripping Water

Window-type aircons are generally easier to troubleshoot. First, look for the drain pan underneath the cooling coils that collects the condensation. If this pan gets full of dust, mold, or algae, the drain hole can get blocked, and the water will have nowhere to go but inside your house.

Turn off and unplug your aircon first. Carefully remove the outer casing (refer to your manual if you’re unsure how). You should see the drain pan. Use a small brush or even an old toothbrush to gently clean out any gunk.

For the drain hole, use a thin wire or a pipe cleaner to clear it of any blockage. Sometimes, warm water poured slowly into the drain pan can also help flush out the clog. Make sure the water is draining outside!

Solutions for Split Type Aircon Dripping Water

Split type aircons are a bit more complex since the indoor and outdoor units are separate. But similar to window type, a common issue is a blocked condensate drain line. If you’re not familiar with aircon parts, the drain line is usually a PVC pipe coming out of your outdoor unit.

First, you can try to gently blow air through the drain pipe from the outside to see if you can dislodge the blockage, if any. Be careful not to blow too hard, as you could damage the pipe or push the blockage further in. You can try using a wet/dry vacuum to suck out the clog from the outside end, or carefully use a thin brush to clear the line.

While not directly causing a drain blockage, very dirty air filters and cooling coils can restrict airflow, causing the evaporator coil to become too cold. This potentially leads to ice formation. When this ice melts, it can overwhelm the drain pan and cause AC leaking water.
