The New Philippine Energy Label: How to Know the Energy Efficiency Rating
According to the Department of Energy, a New Philippine Energy Label design is implemented to comply with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (Republic Act 11285). It serves as a guide to help you choose appliances that are better for your wallet and the environment. It uses a star rating system—the more stars an appliance has, the less energy it uses.
Look for the yellow label on the front of the appliance or the packaging (for lighting) with these details:
- Product type
- Energy Efficiency Rating – The large number you will instantly see indicates how efficient a product is. This rating also aligns with the product’s minimum energy performance (MEP).*
- Estimated energy consumption – This helps you understand how much electricity the appliance is likely to use.
- Type of refrigerant used (for aircon and refrigerators)
- QR code – When scanned, it will show more details like greenhouse gas emissions and previous versions of the product. This information is important for environmental impact, as some refrigerants are more harmful than others.
- Sample monthly electricity cost – You can use this to compute the monthly electricity consumption of the appliance.
Minimum Energy Performance for Products (MEPP) is like a baseline for appliances in the Philippines. It serves as a minimum standard to be considered energy-efficient. In addition, only products that meet the MEP get a star rating. This means they pass the minimum energy efficiency standard set by the government.
Why Do I Need to Check the Energy Rating Label?
From the name itself, you can easily know if an appliance is energy efficient through this label. When shopping for appliances, you can easily compare models from different brands by checking them. Also, you can prioritize energy efficiency, along with the price and features, when making a purchase decision.
So if it’s your first time or in doubt, look for the yellow energy efficiency rating or star rating system on the label. The more stars and the higher the rating, the more energy-efficient the appliance is.
