But as we all know, cleaning a fridge is no fun. It has a lot of parts that need to be removed, surfaces to be wiped, and compartments to be emptied. But we’ve got you an easy-to-follow cleaning guide to keep your refrigerator in its optimal condition:

Step 1: Unplug

First, you’ll need to unplug the fridge. This is to avoid electrical damages that can affect your appliance.

Step 2: Empty it

Unload all of its contents—as in everything. Throw food that has gone bad. Place frozen items in a cooler or in a container to keep them from dripping. If you’ve been keeping ketchup packets or small food items, check their expiry dates and toss them out if they’re past the dates. Then, remove all shelves and drawers and soak them in warm soapy water.

For removable parts that are made of ceramic or glass, wait for them to warm up to avoid breaking.

Step 3: Wipe walls and spills

Next, wash all removable parts using a sponge and dish soap. You can also use a damp cloth or baby wipes for this step.

For the refrigerator, start wiping from top to bottom. Don’t forget the corners, ceilings, and handles. Using a soft cloth dampened with warm soapy water, gently scrub away any dirt or debris that may have accumulated in these areas over time.

Step 4: Rinse everything

When done cleaning, be sure to rinse everything thoroughly with clean water. If there are any stubborn stains or spills that won’t come out easily with soap and water alone, try using a vinegar solution instead. Just mix one part white vinegar with two parts warm water for the best results.

Step 5: Towel dry all surfaces

After, wipe everything down with a fresh, dry towel. Don’t reuse cleaning towels since they could spread bacteria from one surface to another. Plug the refrigerator back in once it dries completely.

6. Deodorize

You’ve done the hard work of eliminating all the grime from your refrigerator. Now it’s time to make sure it smells fresh, too! A solution of vinegar or lemon juice is great for wiping down surfaces and removing unpleasant odors. You may use coffee grounds, too. Just place a bowl in the fridge overnight and you’ll quickly notice a difference. You may also use hydrogen peroxide with water once every few months inside your appliance as an extra precautionary measure.

Cleaning a refrigerator is easy, right?

You can also start by taking the shelves and drawers out so you can clean every nook and cranny. Just don’t forget to put them back together correctly afterward. You certainly wouldn’t want anything falling out! Grab some gloves and get started, you’ll be thankful later!
