As the rainy season approaches, many Filipino households face the aftermath of typhoons—floods. You may not be able to avoid the rising waters, but there are ways to save your appliances. We’re Teko.ph, the largest air conditioning, appliance, and computer services provider in the Philippines, and we have some tips to help you deal with flood-damaged appliances.

Immediate Safety Measures for Flood-Damaged Appliances

If you have no choice but to leave your appliances in flood waters, it’s a smart choice rather than putting your safety at risk. But once the waters recede, what you can do are:

  • Make sure that you unplug and turn off all appliances first.
  • Never touch or use flood-damaged appliances while standing in water.
  • Turn off your main electrical supply if you can still access it.
  • For small appliances like electric fans, toasters, and microwaves, it’s generally safer to replace them.

For larger appliances, check the water line mark or until which part the water has reached the appliance. Usually, you can save the appliance if water does not reach its motor or electrical components. A technician may also be able to repair it if it is not submerged for too long.

Appliance Repair vs. Replacement

A Pinoy like you may have a “diskarte,” but remember that flood-damaged appliances need professional attention.

A washing machine may look ok on the outside, but it may have damage in its internal components that may lead to short circuits when you use it. In addition, you may even void any remaining warranty coverage if you do DIY repairs.

You may need to replace an appliance if it has been submerged in flood for more than 24 hours. If it has rust and mud already covers it, that’s another sign to replace it.

On the other hand, repair is still possible if it has minimal exposure to rainwater. If you notice that only its outer components are wet, you can consider hiring a technician to repair them immediately.
